Rainbow bridge speedy repair
PORT ARTHUR, Texas (KPLC) - Extensive maintenance on the Rainbow Bridge in Southeast Texas is expected to be finished six months ahead of schedule, authorities said.

The repairs began in March 2025, with work contracted to Southern Road and Bridge, LLC, Texas Department of Transportation spokesperson Tanya Avila said. Work included a full-depth concrete deck restoration, railing repairs, and the replacement of 1,200 rivets and four steel member pins.

The project was originally slated to take 18 months to finish, but is now ahead of schedule.

“Thanks to the contractor’s commitment to timely progress—and weather permitting—the maintenance project is now expected to be completed six months ahead of schedule," Avila said.

Sneak peek at walnut street
The beloved Walnut Bridge is nearing the finish line. On Thursday, project managers and Chattanooga Parks and Outdoors confirmed they are 60% complete with renovations.

The 136-year-old bridge has not been renovated in over 30 years. Project Manager James Caron says the work was much needed.

“This project absolutely needed to be done. There's no question about it. I mean, the bridge was in rough shape. When we hand it back to you guys, it's gonna be exactly what you paid for,” said James Caron, project manager.

Caron says the renovations consisted of paint, wood, and electrical operations. There was massive planning ahead of construction to ensure crews maintained the structural integrity of the bridge.
