In 2024, the coastal community of Gulfport was heavily impacted by a series of Gulf storms, most notably Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, which delivered destructive storm surge, flooding, and wind damage across the Tampa Bay region. Surge levels pushed seawater deep into neighborhoods and the downtown waterfront, damaging homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure. More than 600 properties were affected locally, with dozens of structures destroyed or severely compromised, and widespread coastal erosion reshaping portions of the shoreline.
Southern Road & Bridge mobilized 60 trucks and 30 pieces of equipment to operate within this environment—where infrastructure, access, and public safety were immediately compromised. Recovery conditions required rapid mobilization, stabilization, and precision repair work in active, high-risk coastal zones. In communities like Gulfport, where storm surge overwhelmed aging systems and exposed structural vulnerabilities, the focus shifted from damage response to long-term resilience—restoring function, reinforcing protection, and rebuilding critical infrastructure to withstand future events.
