The Dauphin Island Bridge serves as the only roadway connection between Dauphin Island and the mainland of Alabama, making it a critical transportation link for residents, tourism, and emergency access along the Gulf Coast. Spanning approximately 3.5 miles across the Mississippi Sound, the bridge and causeway system carries Alabama State Route 193 and was constructed between 1979 and 1982 after Hurricane Frederic destroyed the previous bridge. The modern structure features a high-level steel girder span designed to withstand severe coastal conditions, including storm surge, saltwater exposure, and hurricane-force winds common to the region. Because of its strategic importance to coastal infrastructure, ongoing maintenance and rehabilitation efforts are essential to preserving the bridge’s structural integrity and ensuring safe, reliable access for the communities and economic activity that depend on it.
